A warm welcome to all readers of the Calais Guide, a site with which I have today exchanged links.
The first surprise on reaching Salut! for the first time may have been that the first items have nothing to do with France but concern a birthday party in Sunderland and a daughter's adventures in Africa.
Not until you reach the item about love and war, resistance and collaboration, will you find anything on France. And even that concerns events at the other end of the country from the Channel ports.
However, the curious visitor to this site will easily find a route to the large number of postings about France. There is a category headed Salut Huit-trois, which can be seen by scrolling down the lefthand sidebar, which deals with my life in the Var - where I spent nine months until moving to Abu Dhabi late in 2007.
With a little more determined research, which the search facility will make simpler, you will also come across a great deal of other material about France beginning in Oct 2006, when I was living in Paris.
By way of a helping hand for newcomers to Salut!, I offer the following links to articles some readers may find interesting:
* Andouillettes, and becoming what you eat: an unashamed eulogy to a much-maligned dish
* Petite Anglaise: mummy dearest: one of several Salut! items on Catherine Sanderson, sacked secretary turned author
* Bienvenue en France; warmer still in parts: a few (admittedly unseasonal) tips to people planning holidays in France
* Oiks and lingerie in the City of Romance: a furtive look at the business of buying chic underwear
* Frogbashing observed: my response to a Francophobic rant
And when you've done, you can follow the link back to the Guide to Calais and gain an idea of how much more the port has to offer than booze warehouses.
