One view of the early evening sky from my garden in Le Lavandou.
Taking the photograph meant looking - broadly speaking - to the north and I am, of course, in the south of France.
But East/west is the title of a new column I am writing for The National in Abu Dhabi. If my previous offerings in the Arts & Life section represented the musings of an expat, East/west perhaps brings the thoughts of an ex-expat.
Each Tuesday (which feels like a promotion; the previous column appeared on Wednesdays), I give readers in the Middle East - or beyond, if they look at the newspaper's website from afar - snapshots of how things are back in Europe, doing my best where possible to draw comparisons with, or make allusion to, the life I knew in the UAE.
Bill Taylor will be relieved to learn that this is in addition to My Word, my Saturday column on the use of language.
I have introduced a new list of links in the left-hand column of Salut! under the East/west heading and these will take you to each week's column.
Among the other links from Salut!, the Huit-trois category will naturally start to grow again now that I have returned to the Var, France's 83rd departément.
It is fair to say that Salut! Salam will probably not. Nor will the separate Salut! Salam site which I launched chiefly to overcome problems of access to Salut! in the UAE. By the time I left, those problems seemed to have disappeared; it was possible to open the Salut! sites from any internet connection.
I hope that these links are of use or interest to some Salut! readers, and have posted some further images of the remarkable night sky that we witness above the hills of the Var.
