Salut! is off on its travels.
A longish journey, to China, for a shortish break, back Feb 8.
It is a packed itinerary so there may not be too much time for reading, whether in Mandarin (in which all the time in the world would be of little use) or English.
IF, however, I get the chance, the choice will be between the following books that have come my way of late, all part-read:* Peter Lennon: Foreign Correspondent: Travels in Paris in the Sixties
Bill Taylor's gift - so far unreciprocated, but then times are hard - and a grand choice. Lennon's gift of the gab translates engagingly to the printed page.* Alan Philps and John Lahutsky: The Boy from Baby House 10
The heartwarming tale of a boy whose extraordinary strength of character enabled him to break free from a dreadful life in Russian institutions. No favouritism from Alan Philps being a friend and former boss: I paid for my own copy.* Mark Law: The Pyjama Game
Another former colleague - and this time, interest declared, the book reached me free of charge - somehow turns that most uninteresting of pursuits, judo, into a warm, funny and surprisingly readable account of a middle-aged man's decision to embrace a young man's sport.I will almost certainly take only one book. Those of you who return to Salut! in my absence will find a little more to read, using the usual navigational options. A bientôt.
