This is not exactly as it will look if you decide to buy the new Salut! mug. The text will be bolder and larger. But read on if you wish to register support for the site and impress friends with how you drink your tea or coffee ...
Salut!, as loyal readers know, came into being at the beginning of October 2006 after The Daily Telegraph decided 29 years of me was quite long enough and took all of five minutes, in a conference call from London to Paris, to fire me. The Telegraph has subsequently gone downhill, or so I'd like to imagine, while Salut! thrives in an impecunious sort of way.
My aim has been to provide reasonably well written news, comment, travelogues and features. The material can be light or serious but has always had a leaning towards France and things Anglo-French and recently became almost exclusively so.
Salut! attracts respectable "hits" - which have risen to 400-600 a day this week as a direct result of many former colleagues wishing to read my appreciation, nothing to do with France, of a great figure of the "old" Telegraph, Jim Allan. But it takes time, effort and even money to keep the site going. As well as the administrative costs, every minute spent on Salut! is a minute I cannot devote to freelance work or, more sensibly still, leisure.
That is why I have decided, more in relation to Salut! Sunderland than here but here as well, to make a modest launch of merchandise sales.
I will start with the mug and add further small items if there seems to be demand. It will, when delivered to anyone who chooses to purchase it, have three lines of differing text.
I cannot work the supplier's online design facility to change the font sizes of each of the three lines of text that appear. But the name Salut! will be much larger than the other two lines, the phrase "I'll drink to that - and more besides" a little smaller and the website address smallest of all and in italics.
To make this work, I need to charge £11 per mug with discounts for two or more purchases and I also need to obtain 10 orders before placing my own with the supplier. Postage is free in the UK, but not outside. No one is obliged to buy, of course, but I hope many of you will. I would say that, wouldn't I?
Please buy if the mugs, as shown subject to the modifications described, appeal. Every order will help ...
Option one: use this button if you purchasing in the UK - in which case postage is free - whether you are paying via Paypal or with a credit/debit card or bank account
Option Two: European Community (postage shows as nil, but the prices have been adjusted to include £3 for the first item, £2 for each subsequent item) ...
Option three; rest of the World. Again the postage has been included in the adjusted prices (£4.50 for first item, £3 for each subsequent one, so that the box marked postage says zero:
