So 100 years ago, this little town on the Varois coast, midway between And God Created Saint-Tropez and Jonny-recreated-Toulon, gained its freedom. Le Lavandou became an independent commune, liberated from the acquisitve Bormes (acquisitive to the extent of acquiring -les-Mimosas as a suffix because Bormes-les-Mimosas was thought more likely to appeal to tourists).
The celebrations are happening this weekend. Free soup was served (it's been unseasonably cold) to all-comers and there was a lunch for those on the electoral list. We just pay large sums in local taxes so didn't qualify and took ourselves off to the beautiful Lac de Saint Cassien instead.
But back to Le Lavandou in time to catch a splendid little exhibition of photographs and local children's artwork commemorating the centenary.
Happy 100th!
