Over at my music site, Salut! Live, I have been inviting readers to nominate their favourite 10 male singers and their favourite 10 female ones.
Any genre or mix of genres is encouraged. No one is required to share my own tastes and few will.
The comments you find at the two items linked above were posted direct to Salut! Live or transferred there after being left at Facebook or Twitter. Feel free to add your thoughts and lists at either web site or if you find references to this spot of fun on social media.
To kick things off, here are my lists. They change regularly:
MEN
1 Ray Charles
2 Christy Moore
3 Bob Dylan
4 John Mayall
5 Roy Orbison
6 Luke Kelly
7 Nic Jones
8 Richard Thompson
9 Sonny Terry
10 Paul Brady
- PS: I have seen only six of them live. No prize unless I think of one. But guess which. And apologies to so many for their omission. Just to select a few from my friend Bill Taylor's list: Ray Davies, David Bowie, Alan Price, Shane MacGowan and Roger McGuinn
AND NOW THE WOMEN
My new list:
1 Sandy Denny
2 Billie Holiday
3 Amy Winehouse
4 June Tabor
5 Aretha Franklin
6 Dusty Springfield
7 Kate Rusby
8 Sinead O’Connor
9 Dolores O’Riordan
10 Eddi Reader
* with apologies to Laura Nyro, Grace Slick, Christine Perfect, Melanie, Maggie Bell or Linda Ronstadt because I do not know/have not kept up with their work sufficiently to make a judgement. Janis Joplin never meant much to me. Mary Black and Dolores Keane bubbled under and didn't quite make the breakthrough. More apologies to Edith Piaf, Annie Lennox and Joan Baez, the Unthanks, Kathryn Roberts and Eliza Carthy. And I've seen only of my list live.
