Has Salut! Finally run its course? I ask the question today while also wishing readers a lovely Christmas and a happy, healthy new year.

Eighteen years is a long time for a blog to run without really ever earning money.There were grander intentions when The Daily Telegraph booted me out after 29 years and a huge following from there came with me to the privatised version of what I’d been doing for the paper from its Paris bureau.
It did give me a shop window, somewhere commissioning editors could see whether I was any good. Work came my way as a result.
Then another staff job presented itself. By the time I was properly freelancing again, the market had changed. In any case, those likely to ask me to write for them were mostly doing so already or knew what I could do.
Now, not surprisingly in a difficult climate for independent journalism, work is drying up. It may be a passing phase, I may be on the brink of full retirement.
But I’ll keep on writing. Much of the sort of thing I used to do here is now published - free to all untiI I decide to make it partly by subscription - at my Substack pages.
